After NVBC

After NVBC, I was chillin on the couch with Patches watching Triple D and nodding off. My three were out and about and I was enjoying the quiet time. I was prompted to read more from Amy Carmichael. I am so glad I didn't quench that urge.

"I will share my crumb of comfort: Do not be weighed down with 'flying' words. Do not expect your peace to come from the mouths of men (or women, my addition). And do not allow the ignorant stock phrases of the 'well' to the 'ill' to penetrate your shield. How can they, the unwounded, know anything about the matter? But the Lord our Creator knows! Thus, we can be comforted and filled with His gift, an inward sweetness. and we can thank Him even when others trample unawares upon us, talking smooth nothings." Amy Carmichael

Her prayer:

My Father, you know the things that weigh me down...hurtful words...crushing circumstances...I will be gracious when others offer "smooth nothings". I will listen for only your words, and let my spirit rest in the assurance that comes with your every whisper to me...

That is an absolute pairing to today's message!

It's time to listen to this.

Humbled & Obedient

NVBC this morning's notes...

Palm Sunday: On the Road to the Cross
"For we who live are always being given over to the death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh" 2 Corinthians 4:11

John 12:12-15
An Invitation - to the Cross
"On the next day the large crowd who had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and began to shout, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel.”  Jesus, finding a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written, Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your King is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.”

Introduction: Often suffering is confronted with a desire for either avoidance or healing; God has other reasons...

1. Notice significant things about the "Triumphal Entry"

a. The king is riding on a donkey (vs. 14)
b. The cry or the shout was not of a celebration, it was the Hebrew for "please save"! (vs 13)

Hosanna is often thought of as a declaration of praise, similar to hallelujah, but it is actually a plea for salvation. The Hebrew root words are found in Psalm 118:25, which says, “Save us, we pray, O LORD!” (ESV). The Hebrew words yasha (“deliver, save”) and anna (“beg, beseech”) combine to form the word that, in English, is “hosanna.” Literally, hosanna means “I beg you to save!” or “please deliver us!”

c.  The Early Church's prayer during severe persecution was "Come, Lord Jesus!" (Rev 22:20)

2. Ever since Jesus died and embraced the Cross, a symbol of suffering and brokenness, followers of Jesus are being invited because:

a. You get to know Christ deeply (Phil 3:8-11)

This was exactly what I was reading last night!

b. You develop godly virtues. (Romans 5:1-5)

c. It perfects and provides future encouragement to God's Church (Col. 1:24).

3. Two possible responses to suffering/brokenness:

a. Rejection:

  • Wish it goes away -  you pray for healing
  • You hate it, fight it, question it, deny it, cover it.
  • RESULT: Bitterness and alienation

b. Embrace:

  • Acceptance; God has permitted it (Romans 8:28)
  • Embrace: 'don't understand it, but God has a purpose'
  • Witness and worship; identify with Christ! Glorify Christ! (Luke 7:36-50, John 12:1-8)

Conclusion: The Cross and the wilderness are places where Jesus hangs out...

I Come Quietly To Meet You

I haven't read this little book in a while. But when I finally do feel the Spirit nudging me to be still, it's always exactly what I need when exactly I need it.

More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ.
Philippians 3:8

"It is the I in you and me that blinds our eyes. The loss of I  that I may know Him, see Him with new clearness in all creation...even in souls that are unlovable and unbeautiful. May the Lord grant this to us all. "  Amy Carmichael

My Father, this moment, I push aside all sense of need...every request...each complaint...even words of praise or worship...just to stand silent...to turn the eyes of my soul to you...to look deep into your wonders...

Ann Voskamp!

"Hey Soul? Yeah, I know it's been hard & uphill & you've wanted to throw in the towel -- but hang on -- "God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up... when the time comes."
Matthew 6:34 (MSG)

"Every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good." Romans 8:28 (MSG)

He promises He's got us & He's turning even all our *Hard Things* into *Good Things*...

He promises the Real Good Things can never be taken away from you *ever, ever, ever*...
and He promises that the Best Things are still up ahead, the best things are forthcoming -- Heaven & Him & Home are all up ahead!

You can count on it, like a refrain to let courage sing loud in your soul:

What feels like a bad thing  can unexpectedly open the door  to the best things."

Frustration

Daniel's class is reading Hoot. Just like last year, he lost the book. Just like last year, I ordered a new one from Amazon (well gently used). Do you order books from Amazon? It's one of my favorite things to do. I always go for the ones that are only $.01 with shipping of $3.99. I buy lots of gifts. That way if the person never reads the book then I have only spent $4.00.

Anyway, long story short. This is what I received. It was in great shape with one problem. Can you guess?

Yeah, unfortunately, I cannot give this to Daniel's English teacher with the previous owners name on it.
